Lorena: Empowering Herself and Others

By: Erin Porteous

If you have ever been to William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club, you may have enjoyed a tour of the Club, courtesy of Lorena. She greets visitors with energy, excitement, and a genuine passion for what the Club has to offer. If you’ve been on one of her tours, you are in good company – last year she led none other than the governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, around the Club.

Today, at 15, Lorena showcases her charisma and humor, connecting with anyone who walks through the doors of the Club with ease. But it was a different story when she first joined William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club at the age of ten. “When I first came to the Club, I had no confidence whatsoever,” Lorena shared with me, “but when I stepped through the door of the Boys & Girls Club, I finally found my voice.”

A Playwright with Purpose

One of the most striking ways in which Lorena showcases the power within her is through her writing. At school, she crafted a powerful play that addresses the pressing issue of bullying and its profound effects on young girls. Through her script, she shed light on the pain and challenges faced by those who are often silenced. Lorena's play not only entertained but also educated, leaving a lasting impact on her peers and teachers alike.

Music and Mentorship

Lorena's talent isn't confined to words alone; it also finds expression in the realm of music. At her Club, she taught a group of members how to sing and play a heartwarming song from the beloved movie "Coco." Through these musical sessions, she's not just teaching melody and chords; she's instilling confidence and a sense of accomplishment in these young members’ hearts and minds.

A Dream to Inspire

Lorena's aspirations are as high as her spirit. She dreams of becoming a well-known author, a goal she's actively working towards. Her determination to share her perspective and her stories with the world is not only commendable but also a source of inspiration to those around her. Her ambition shows that no dream is too big when you have courage to go for it.

Guiding the Next Generation

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Lorena has taken on the role of mentor at William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club. She conducts workshops about boundaries for the younger members, empowering them with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the complexities of life. Through her guidance and fun interactive games, these members are learning the importance of self-respect, consent, and setting healthy limits.

In the heart of William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club, Lorena has found her place to inspire, educate, and uplift those around her. Her journey from a shy newcomer to a confident, passionate advocate for change is an example of the power of places like Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. As I watch her grow and make her mark on the world, one thing is clear: Lorena is a force to be reckoned with, and it's only just the beginning of her journey.
