\"Opportunity is the currency of the Boys & Girls Club,\" Barrows says. \"And it's a nominal fee each year to be a member, but you're exceptional. And if you make exceptional choices, <\/span>you'll<\/span> get to do things that other kids <\/span>can't<\/span> even dream of. Last month we celebrated the anniversary of a remarkable partnership unlike any other, whose strength and dedication have forged a legacy of hope, promise, and joy. Its 20-year history has ignited the fire of achievement, inspiration, passion, and change within young minds and moved the hearts of some of Denver\u2019s most iconic heroes. What began as a desire to better serve Denver\u2019s youth in 2003, today the partnership between the Denver Broncos and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is an exemplary model of community investment in action. In fact, I now see the model replicated at other franchises nationwide, like that of the Baltimore Ravens and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore or the Portland Blazers and Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The special relationship between the Denver Broncos football team and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver has been truly remarkable. Over the last two decades, it has opened doors and ushered in opportunities for thousands of Club members. We have seen countless examples of, to quote Club Director Rich Barrows, \u201cexceptional kids\u201d who have grabbed hold of their own futures and reached their greatest potential during their hours, weeks, and years spent at the Club.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It began with an idea sparked from a deep commitment to Denver\u2019s youth, and an opportunity to bring that idea to life. In 2003, Pat Bowlen was the owner of the Denver Broncos and a leader who brought a deep passion for helping kids and building community. He and his leadership team actively pursued any opportunity to ensure all kids and teens had access to every opportunity possible, without barriers. And, as a great steward of his resources and influence, Bowlen knew the entire Denver Broncos organization had a responsibility to catalyze and invest in the community. At that same time, Mayor Wellington Webb had identified the Montbello neighborhood as a community challenged with multiple needs gaps. Both leaders knew the importance of providing safe, inspirational opportunities for youth.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

He <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> just want to be a guy sitting on the second floor looking out the window watching practice signing his name on checks. He wanted to be involved. <\/span>That\u2019s<\/span> why players came to Denver. It was a little different, and I spent time at other places. Investing in a Boys & Girls Club<\/span> was <\/span>a way <\/span>for the Denver Broncos <\/span>to bring their community vision to life<\/span> by bringing opportunities and possibilities to hundreds of kids<\/span>.<\/span> When the announcement was made that the <\/span>newly-created<\/span> Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club was opening to kids across Montbel<\/span>lo, Cindy <\/span>Kellogg<\/span>,<\/span> former <\/span>S<\/span>enior <\/span>D<\/span>irector of <\/span>C<\/span>ommunity <\/span>D<\/span>evelopment for the Broncos, <\/span>shared<\/span>, <\/span>\u201cThis initiative is more than just writing a check. We could open the door<\/span>s and <\/span>immed<\/span>iately<\/span> start <\/span>imp<\/span>acting<\/span> kids.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> The pl<\/span>ayers <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> need any convincing; many were impacted by Boys & Girls Clubs themselves, and some had grown up in <\/span>Montbello<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Once the doors of the 1<\/span>5<\/span>,000 square foot Club opened<\/span> for the first time on August 28, 2003, <\/span>the stream of <\/span>Montbello<\/span> youth<\/span> hardly stopped long enough for them to shut.<\/span> As soon as one had checked in another appeared, eagerly awaiting his or her moment <\/span>to be <\/span>welcomed in by the warm smiles of Ms. Ford or Ms. Shaunte at the front desk. What was once a vacant <\/span>rec center <\/span>had quickly become<\/span> the community hub Bowlen envisioned<\/span> \u2013 a home and refuge for hundreds of <\/span>youth<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

F<\/span>rom the planning stages of the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club through today, <\/span>the Club\u2019s leader has grown the Club and the kids in it right alongside the Denver Broncos. <\/span>Rich Barrows has served as Club Director, mentor, community leader, and anchor in the <\/span>Montbello<\/span> community<\/span> through hopeful and <\/span>hard times<\/span>. <\/span>As a former<\/span> Club kid<\/span> himself, Rich had already dedicated decades of his life to <\/span>Boys & Girls Clubs. <\/span>As the Director of the Broncos Club, he doubled down on his resolve to serve kids<\/span> he knew desperately needed a safe space to belong, be inspired, and grow<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

While the Broncos\u2019 five-year investment charted a course for the Club, Rich\u2019s steady hand led the Club through beautiful and uncharted waters. Along the way, the commitment and enthusiasm of both organizations grew in countless ways, along with the partnership\u2019s impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2008, the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center was dedicated as a way to better serve Montbello\u2019s teens. Youth sought it out as a safe place to spend their time after school seeing friends; the frequent visits from Denver Broncos players kept them there. Over the years, the faces of NFL players late Demaryius Thomas [D.T.] and Broncos safety Justin Simmons became familiar. D.T. became a mentor to several members.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Like Pat Bowlen, <\/span>once Justin Simmons became involved his contributions of time and leadership never stopped.<\/span> In<\/span> 2021, <\/span>Justin Simmons and two teen members, supported by members of the Club's leadership program, started an annual March for Peace to bring the <\/span>Montbello<\/span> community together. <\/span>That same year <\/span>the team partnered with <\/span><\/span>RISE<\/span><\/span><\/a> to implement an eight-week annual program focused on <\/span>providing<\/span> teens<\/span> a platform to talk about race and social justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Beyond visiting the Club, the players<\/span>, cheerleaders, and Broncos staff<\/span> improved <\/span>it.<\/span> T<\/span>he<\/span> team hosts Clubs from across the city each year at Empower Field at Mile High for Thuder's Annual Holiday Party and <\/span>infuses outdoor activity with star power<\/span>\u00a0through their PLAY60 and Miles for Miles programs.<\/span> Last year, <\/span>Broncos<\/span> safety Justin Simmons acknowledged Club members Nashara Ellerbee and <\/span>Naja\u2019Ray<\/span> West with the NFL\u2019s inaugural <\/span><\/span>Inspire Change Changemaker Award<\/span><\/span><\/a> for their work on the March for Peace in Montbello<\/span>. Another member, Eunique Lee, grew a passion for customizing athletic shoes into a thriving business thanks to the recognition she received from <\/span>leaders like Broncos General Manager, George <\/span>Paton<\/span> and Broncos Owner <\/span>Dr. <\/span>Condoleezza Rice, among others, who commissioned custom shoes for the <\/span><\/span>NFL\u2019s My Cause My Cleats initiative.<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

When asked how they feel having stars in their midst, Club members are apt to respond with sentiment that the Broncos are just as much a part of the Club as its young members. As Naja\u2019Ray West, a Broncos Club alumna says, \u201cThe players don\u2019t expect any special treatment. They make sure to give <\/span>us<\/span><\/i> a voice. They\u2019re one of us.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The players\u2019 frequent presence and genuine engagement not only show Club kids that success is within reach, it shows them that <\/span>they matter<\/span><\/i> \u2013 to their Club, their community, to their city, and to their heroes. It\u2019s been one of the remarkable examples of the true partnership between the Denver Broncos and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\"Some of the most important relationships for kids, especially those who come from unstable homes, are those mentor relationships they receive in their adolescence,\" <\/span>Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver CEO, Erin <\/span>Porteous<\/span>,<\/span> says. \"These become the <\/span>sibling<\/span>s, the aunties and uncles, sometimes the full-blown kind of motherhood or fatherhood figure. To have that influence on a child really means a lot. And the fact that the Broncos so graciously allow players and coaching staff to play that mentor role to young people speaks volumes again beyond just the philanthropic sup<\/span>por<\/span>t.\"<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Despite the success<\/span> of the Club, Boys & Girls Clubs<\/span> <\/span>of Metro Denver<\/span><\/span><\/span> and the <\/span>Denver<\/span> Broncos <\/span>sought<\/span> more. They never wavered in their commitment to finding more opportunities to better the lives of Club members. What started as a five-year commitment to funding the Club<\/span> developed into a broad and ongoing collaboration grounded by heartfelt connections and a deep, authentic commitment to the Montbello community and Denver\u2019s kids. <\/span>Beyond their investment in <\/span>the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club and<\/span> their impact in the<\/span> Montbello<\/span> community<\/span>, the Broncos <\/span>have shown a steadfast commitment to kids and teens <\/span>across <\/span>all<\/span> Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver through <\/span>leadership on our Board of Directors<\/span> <\/span>and Associate Board<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/span>From 2010 \u2013 2019, former Broncos President, Joe Ellis, sat on our Board. Then, in March 2019, Brittany Bowlen joined. Her deep commitment to our mission <\/span><\/span><\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span><\/span> end with the passing of her father; she currently serves as Vice Chairwoman and is actively involved in governance. This legacy of leadership continues today with Damani Leech, the Broncos\u2019 current President and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver\u2019s most recently appointed Board member.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\"Across the NFL, the partnership between the Denver Broncos and Boy & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is one of the strongest. No one who is part of the Denver Broncos organization is doing any of this for personal gain. And yet, that they are deserving of accolades and recognition is broadly evident. In 2022 ESPN shone a light on the partnership at the ESPYs, awarding them the prestigious <\/span>Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award<\/span><\/a>. In particular, the organization was applauded for their immense donations of money and time, and for being the only professional football team in America to fully fund a Boys & Girls Club.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since that opening day on a Thursday in 2003, the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club has served over 15,000 kids and teens. <\/span>Through their Clubhouse Champion sponsorship and the support they have provided in the form of over $8 million in financial and in-kind donations, volunteerism, community programming, and Board leadership, the Broncos have left an indelible imprint on this organization.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

And,<\/span> <\/span>Carrie Walton-Penner announced the Broncos\u2019 renewed, five-year commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver<\/span><\/span><\/a> at an event celebrating our 20 years of partnership and t<\/span>he many more years of<\/span> investment that will become part of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the Denver Broncos and the Denver Broncos Foundation\u2019s<\/span><\/span> legacy.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>While Pat Bowlen has passed on<\/span>, Broncos leadership has shifted over the years,<\/span> and December <\/span>2023 <\/span>mark<\/span>s<\/span> the retirement of Rich Barrows, the legacy of the partnership will only <\/span>strengthen<\/span>. <\/span>The<\/span> many players and staff w<\/span>ho have dedicated <\/span>hours of mentorship, coaching, and joy helped build the monument of hope that is the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club \u2013 and <\/span>their<\/span> sights are<\/span> ever-<\/span>set on <\/span>bigger, better things for Denver\u2019s kids.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
