Gates Camp Program

Gates Camp

We offer an overnight five-day, single-sex program. Campers range in age from 8 to 13, and many come from "at-risk" neighborhoods with high gang rates, high school drop-out rates, drug/alcohol influences, and unstable family environments. Kids who are members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver can attend camp for a $10 registration fee.

Camp begins Monday morning, as campers are placed into cabin groups of up to ten kids, with a maximum of seventy kids at camp per week. Two staff members are assigned to each cabin group for the week. A cabin counselor (same sex) supervises the group 24 hours a day and escorts the kids to their assigned activities. A second staff member (opposite sex) will be with the group during meals, all-group times, and as needed at other times during the week.

Each week at camp alternates between "boys' weeks" and "girls' weeks", so for example, during a boys' week, male staff members serve as cabin counselors and are directly responsible for their group; female staff members are activity instructors and will be paired with groups during non-activity times as a co-counselor. Staff roles alternate when a girls' week begins.

Activities at camp include rock climbing, high and low ropes courses, challenge initiatives, canoeing, fishing, archery, nature games, handicrafts, and electives contingent upon staff interests and creativity. Special activities include all-camp events, evening campfires, and camp-outs. Each cabin group is assigned a weekly schedule of activities, and the adventure never ends!
